Quran Surah Openings mystery revealed, Allah only knows

While conducting my research, I discovered Hebrew letters not only have numerical values associated with them but also carry symbolic meanings. As an example, the Hebrew letter Aleph (אָ) which is also the same letter in Arabic (أ), symbolizes GOD, Creator, first, strength, leader, LORD, King, and sovereign. Bet ‎) which is also the same letter in Arabic (بِ), means house, temple, tabernacle, in, tent, body, dwelling, universe. The letter Ayin (ע), which is also the same letter in Arabic (ع) that signifies concepts such as eye, sight, comprehension, insight, and perception. Eye in Arabic is Ayin and House in Arabic is Bet. Please refer to the attached image for the remaining letters. Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic are all part of the Semitic language group. “The names for the characters were chosen with reference to near-by things, such as parts of the body and other objects of the daily life peculiar to the Bedouins, the name of each of which began with the very sound the letter indicated. In a few cases the names seem to have been derived from the form which the sign represented. These names, as well as the order of the letters, certainly existed at least one thousand years B.C., for they were known when the Greeks adopted their alphabet from the Semites. At this period the alphabet must already have undergone local variations among the different ethnical groups of the northern Semites.” See link. Could the Arabic letters have the same meaning as the Hebrew ones? If this is indeed true, could it potentially solve the enigma in the Quran? Some Quran Surahs start with specific letters.

Chapter 30: The Byzantines / Al-Rum (Alif, Lam, Mim.1 The Byzantines have been vanquished2 in the nearby territory, but after their defeat they will be victorious3 in a few years. All command belongs to God, before this and hereafter, and on that day the faithful will rejoice4 at God's help. He helps whomever He wishes, and He is the all-mighty, the All-merciful.5 This is a promise of God: God does not break his promise, but most people do not know.6 They know just an outward aspect of the life of the world, but they are oblivious of the Hereafter.7)

Chapter 32: Prostration / Al-Sajdah (Alif, Lam, Mim.1 the gradual sending down of the Book, there is no doubt in it, is from the Lord of all the worlds.2 But they say, ‘he has fabricated it.’ No, it is the truth from your Lord, that you may warn a people to whom there did not come any warner before you, so that they may be guided to the right path.3)

Apart from the common starting letters, what other links can we find between the openings of these six chapters? In the opening paragraphs, God consistently refers to the Book (the Quran) that He has given upon humanity. He asserts the Book is the embodiment of truth, a source of guidance, a repository of commandments and promises. God will test people to see who the true believer is. The depiction of God presents Him as an all-powerful and infinitely merciful being.

Alif then could mean GOD (Allah)

Lam: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: rod, authority, tongue, teaching. Then Lam could mean The King and Owner of Dominion (AL-MALIK)

Mim: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: water, chaos, disorder, strength, mighty, Messiah. Then Mim could mean The Magnificent, The Supreme (AL-‘ATHEEM)

Chapter 7: The Elevations / Al-A’raf (Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad.1 This is a Book that has been sent down to you and as admonition for the faithful; so let there be no disquiet in your heart on its account that you may warn thereby.2 Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow any masters besides Him. Little is the admonition that you take!3 How many a town we have destroyed! Our punishment came to it at night, or while they were taking a midday nap.4 When our punishment overtook them, their cry was only that they said, ‘We have indeed been wrongdoers!’5)

This is the only chapter that starts with Alif, Lam, Mim, Sad. Like the previous chapters, this chapter repeats Alif, Lam, Mim. The only change made here is the inclusion of the letter Sad. The Surah's opening addresses The Book sent to us as a warning and reminder, but it also incorporates the concept of punishment in the conclusion.

Alif then could mean GOD (Allah)

Lam then could mean The King and Owner of Dominion (AL-MALIK)

Mim then could mean The Magnificent, The Supreme (AL-‘ATHEEM)

Sad: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: To pull, a hook, desire, harvest. Harvest in Arabic means Hasad (adding Ha before Sad) حصاد. Sad then could mean The All-Enumerating, The Counter (AL-MUHSEE)

Chapter 10: Jonah / Yunus (Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the Wise Book.1 Does it seem odd to these people that We have revealed to a man from among themselves, declaring, ‘warn mankind and give good news to the faithful that they are in good standing with their Lord’? The faithless say, ‘This is indeed a plain magician.’2 Your Lord is indeed God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and then settled on the Throne, directing the command. There is no intercessor, except after His leave. That is God, your Lord! So worship Him. Will you not then take admonition?3)

Chapter 15 Al-Hijr (Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the signs of the Book and the manifest Quran.1 Much will the faithless wish that they had been Muslims.2 Leave them to eat and enjoy to be diverted by longings. Soon they will know.3 We did not destroy any town but that it had a known term.4 No nation can advance its time nor can it defer it.5 They said, ‘O you, to whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are indeed crazy.6 Why do you not bring us the angels if you are truthful?!’7 We do not send down the angels except with due reason, and then they will not be granted any respite.8 Indeed, we have sent down the Reminder, and, indeed, We will preserve it.8)

Each chapter starts by discussing the Book in various aspects, such as its manifestation, preservation, illumination, wisdom, definitiveness, and elaboration. We belong to God, and it is to Him we will return. He is the creator of the heavens, the earth, and all other things, and He is the supreme being. There is no God but Him.

Alif then could mean GOD (Allah)

Lam then could mean The King and Owner of Dominion (AL-MALIK)

Ra: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: highest, most important. Then Ra could mean The Greatest, The Most Grand (AL-KABEER)

Chapter 13: Thunder / Al-Ra’d (Alif, Lam, Mim, Ra. These are the signs of the Book. That which has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe in it.1 It is God who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and then presided over the Throne. He disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. He directs the command, and elaborates the signs that you may be certain of encountering your Lord.2)

Once again, this introductory paragraph emphasizes the Book as a source of truth, authority, and provides us with the signs. The signs in the awe-inspiring physics of our world, such as the movement of the earth, and the moon, serve as examples of the many miracles that surround us.

Alif then could mean GOD (Allah)

Lam then could mean The King and Owner of Dominion (AL-MALIK)

Mim then could mean The Magnificent, The Supreme (AL-‘ATHEEM)

Ra could then mean The Greatest, The Most Grand (AL-KABEER)

Chapter 19: Mary / Maryam (Kaf, Ha, Ya, ‘Ayn, Sad.1 This is an account of your Lord's mercy on Zechariah, His servant,2 when he called out to his Lord with a secret cry.3 He said, ‘My Lord! Indeed, my bones have become feeble, and my head has turned white with age, yet never have I, my Lord, been unblessed in my supplications to You!4 Indeed, I fear my kinsmen, after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me from Yourself an heir5 who may inherit from me and inherit from the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, pleasing to You!’6 ‘O Zechariah! Indeed, We give you the good news of a son, whose name is “John.” Never before have We made anyone his namesake.’7 He said, ‘My Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I am already advanced in age?’8 He said, ‘So shall it be. Your Lord has said, “It is simple for Me.” Certainly I created you before when you were nothing.’9 He said, ‘My Lord! Appoint a sign for me.’ He said, ‘Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three complete nights.’10 So he emerged before his people from the temple and signaled to them that they should glorify God morning and evening.11)

In the chapter's opening, we observe how God granted Zechariah's request for mercy by blessing him with a child. God, as the creator, has the power to create and take away as He pleases, and it is effortless for Him.

Chapter 20: Ta Ha (Ta Ha!1 we did not send down the Quran to you that you should be miserable,2 but only as an admonition to him who fears his Lord.3 A sending down of the Revelation from Him who created the earth and the lofty heavens4 — the All-beneficent, settled on the Throne.5 To him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and whatever is between them and whatever is under the ground.6 Whether you speak loudly or in secret tones, He indeed knows the secret and what is still more hidden.7 God—there is no God except Him—to Him belong the Best Names.8)

The beginning of this chapter emphasizes that the Quran was not revealed to bring suffering, but rather as a source of mercy. God sees everything. He is benevolent and knowledgeable, possesses the best names. Notice that the letters all represent God’s names.

Ta: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: surrounds, twists. Then Ta could mean The Extender (AL-BAASIT)

Ha could mean The Guardian, The Witness, The Overseer (AL-MUHAYMIN)

Chapter 28: The Story / Al-Qasas (Ta, Sin, Mim.1 These are the signs of the Manifest Book.2 We relate to you truly some of the account of Moses and Pharaoh for a people who have faith.3 Pharoah indeed tyrannized over the land, reducing its people to factions, abasing one group of them, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. Indeed, he was indeed one of the agents of corruption.4 And we desired to show favor to those who were oppressed in the land, and to make them imams and to make them the heirs,5 and to establish them in the land and to show Pharoah and Haman and their hosts from them that of which they were apprehensive.6)

The opening paragraphs discuss the signs found in the Manifest Books and the presence of tyrannical and oppressive individuals. There will be an end to their existence, and God, who is All-beneficent and All-mighty, will uplift those who are oppressed.

Ta then could mean The Extender (AL-BAASIT)

These are the signs of the Quran and the manifest book,1 a guidance and good news for the faithful2— those who maintain the prayer and pay the zakat, and who are certain of the Hereafter.3 As for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds seem decorous to them, and so they are bewildered.4 They are the ones for whom there is a terrible punishment, and they are the ones who will be the biggest losers in the Hereafter.5 You indeed receive the Quran from One who is all-wise, all-knowing.6)

Like the preceding chapters, believers can rely on God's support while oppressors will face divine punishment.

Chapter 36: Ya Sin ( Ya Sin!1 By the Wise Quran,2 you are indeed one of the apostles,3 on a straight path.4 It is a scripture sent down gradually from the All-mighty, the All-merciful5 that you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, so they are oblivious.6 The word has already become due against most of them, so they will not have faith.7 Indeed, We have put iron collars around their necks, which are up to the chins, so their heads are upturned.8 And We have put a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, then we have blind-folded them, so they do not see.9 It is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not have faith.10 You can only warn someone who follows the Reminder and fears the All-beneficent in secret; so give him the good news of forgiveness and a noble reward.11)

The opening of the Chapter explains Muhammad's mission. He was sent to a group of people (Arabs) whose ancestors had received no warnings. However, he will face obstacles as some individuals resist change, but there are others who will heed the warning. Take note, this message is not solely directed at Muhammad; it encompasses every Muslim who is committed to guiding people towards the truth.

Chapter 46: Al-Ahqaf (Ha, Mim.1 The gradual sending down of the Book is from God, the All-mighty, the All-wise.2 We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them except with consummate wisdom and for a specified term. Yet the faithless are disregardful of what they are warned.3)

All the chapter's beginnings above convey the same idea. God has gradually revealed the Book to us, in Arabic, urging us to ponder and use our intelligence to recognize the signs He has sent. We should be mindful that our time in this existence is finite, so we should prepare ourselves.

Ha: the Hebrew meaning of the letter: fence, inner chamber, gate, separate, protect. Then Ha could mean The Preserver, The All-Heedful and All-Protecting (AL-HAFEEDH)

Chapter 42: Counsel / Al-Shura (Ha, Mim,1 ‘Ayn, Sin, Qaf.2 God, the All-mighty and the All-wise, thus reveals to you and to those who were before you:3 whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth belongs to Him, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.4 The heavens are about to be rent apart from above them, while the angels celebrate the praise of their Lord and plead for forgiveness for those faithful who are on the earth. Indeed, God is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful!5 As for those who have taken masters besides Him, God is watchful over them and you are not their keeper.6 Thus have We revealed to you an Arabic Quran that you may warn the people of the Mother of the Towns and those around it, and warn them of the Day of Gathering, in which there is no doubt, whereupon a part of mankind will be in paradise and a part will be in the Blaze.7 Had God wished, He would have surely made them one community; but He admits whomever He wishes into His mercy, and the wrongdoers do not have any friend or helper.8)

Just as the previous chapters illustrate, God displays His power through His miraculous signs. He shows mercy and forgiveness till Judgement Day and He warns the disbelievers.

Ha could mean The Preserver, The All-Heedful and All-Protecting (AL-HAFEEDH)

Mim then could mean The Magnificent, The Supreme (AL-‘ATHEEM)

‘Ayn could mean The All-Knowing, The Omniscient (AL-‘ALEEM)

Sin then could mean The Perfection and Giver of Peace (AS-SALAM)

That is a far-fetched return!’3 We know what the earth diminishes from them, and with Us is a preserving Book.4 They indeed impugned the truth when it came to them; so they are now in a perplexed state of affairs.5)

The opening of this chapter delves into the events that take place in the Hereafter. Eventually, the disbelievers will believe, but it will be too late, as we will have already resurrected.

Chapter 68: The Pen / Al-Qalam (Nun. By the Pen and what they write:1 by your Lord's blessing you are not crazy,2 and yours indeed will be an everlasting reward,3 and indeed you possess a great character.4 You will see and they will see,5 which one of you is crazy.6 Indeed, your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided.7 So do not obey the deniers,8 who are eager that you should be flexible, so that they too may be flexible towards you.9 And do not obey any vile swearer,10 scandal-monger, tale-bearer,11 hinderer of all good, sinful transgressor,12 callous and, on top of that, baseborn13— who behaves thus only because he has wealth and children.14 When our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’15 Soon We shall brand him on his snout.16)

In this chapter, God makes it clear to His Apostle that it is the disbelievers who have lost their minds, not him. Through their actions, the disbelievers seal their fate and ultimately decide where they will end up. Don't allow them to mislead you and ignore their advice.

Only Allah Knows الله أعلم
